I was in a Victorian emergency room today. A huge amount of people waiting (maybe 30) and only ONE doctor on shift at 7pm. Obviously the poor chap was trying his best. I get the feeling it was a usual day for him.
Several of my fellow waitees had pain issues yet as there was only one doctor and a few nurses pain relief was obviously some time away.
One poor boy had a broken arm. There was no bed so he had to sleep across 3 chairs. Or the woman bleeding profusely from the nose with nurses conferring nearby too busy to help.
Given what I've seen of the public health system in this state - it really needs some reform to ease these issues.
I've been working for sometime in the healthcare system in a Victorian rural hospital. Despite it stating explicitly in our contract that we are to be paid overtime the hospital refuses to do so. There reasons for doing so are incredibly insulting. There claim is that we work slowly so as to stay here longer and get paid more. We don't want to stay here we hate it here and the last thing we'd do is work slowly to stay here longer.
