AMA Victoria accept Government offer

AMA Victoria this week accepted the State Government’s enterprise bargaining offer for public hospital doctors. As such, this blog is now closed.

Thanks to every one who has been involved with this blog. Your comments and feedback have proved invaluable in highlighting the state of the public health system. The blog is now re-open for your comments.

Members have been asked to participate in an indicative ballot on whether or not to accept the Government’s offer made on 22 December 2008. The AMA Victoria Board is recommending that members accept the offer. If you have not received your ballot, please email aspap@amavic.com.au with “Ballot paper” in the subject heading. Please ensure your ballot is returned to AMA Victoria before 5 February 2009.

New Enterprise Bargaining offer from Government

The Victorian Government has made an offer to AMA Victoria for a new Enterprise Bargaining Agreement on 22 December 2008. The AMA Victoria Board is recommending that members accept the offer. Read more here.

This blog site has clearly highlighted that conditions in Victorian public hospitals are not up to scratch. The blog has become essential reading for many in Government. It has been quoted in Parliament. There have been feature stories in the media, notably The Age, Stateline and Derryn Hinch on 3AW in the last week. There has even been a Parliamentary Inquiry initiated into public hospitals, where the blog has been a key contributing factor.

Our initial aim with the blog was to demonstrate that real doctors are experiencing real issues working in the Victorian public hospital system. Mission accomplished — thank you. The blog is providing a voice.

However, this voice is still not being heard loudly by the Premier, the Treasurer and the Health Minister. The Ministerial Review is now 12 months old, with little action. The EBA has been expired for over four months. Hospital performance figures are getting worse. Patients and doctors are working in a broken system. It’s time to kick it up a gear.

Please, keep providing your stories. However, please consider the following:

Identify your hospital. Where the hospital is identified, the Government has said it will investigate. Let’s give them plenty to look at – particularly when the Parliamentary Inquiry subpoenas your CEOs.

Contact a journalist. A few journalists have already posted on the blog looking for your stories. Some have already run stories that have highlighted problems. Remember that a good journalist will not use your name unless you give them permission to do so. The journalists listed to the right of this post are well aware of the sensitivities of your talking to them, and will look after you.

Contact the Legislative Council Committee Inquiry in Public Hospitals. The Parliamentary Inquiry would like to hear your stories. See details here and email your submission – even if it’s only a couple of paragraphs – richard.willis@parliament.vic.gov.au

Participate in professional action. Keep an eye on the “Stop Press” section at doctors4hospitals.com.au and take part in professional action planned within your hospital.
